Equipment installed 3 years ago by Albany Police Department is paying off by doing a lot more than just catching criminals.

APD's license plate scanners have brought in more than $2 million in fines from citations for license suspensions, unregistered vehicles and more. The scanners originally cost about $20,000.

During a Wednesday meeting, officials gave citizens an in-depth look at the new technologies.

"What they do get from the tag reader is information, regarding the tag, no addresses, no names or anything like that," said Phyllis Whitley-Banks from the Albany Police Department.

The department has five tag readers, one for each district.
