Westover Extension project delayed by rain

LEE CO., GA (WALB) -

Lee County commissioners voted to move forward with a major road project delayed by rain.

They decided to start accepting bids for drainage and paving of the new Westover Road Extension. It will connect Ledo Road near Walmart to Fussell Road to relieve traffic congestion and improve response times for emergency units.  The road should have been finished by now, but bad weather put it behind schedule.

"We've just had so much over time and so much money we've had to spend on drainage projects that we just can't do it in-house," said Ron Rabun, County Manager. "So, we think it's a job that's better done with the private sector. They're bigger and they can do it more efficiently and there are some major road paving firms right in this area."

The county manager believes bids will come in under the $427,000 budgeted for the project.      They need to finish the project by the end of September in order to use a $250,000 grant from the state to help pay for it.
