Viewpoint: Jaywalking

We think it is great news that Albany Police are going to write citations for those they see crossing the street illegally.

Some of you might think what is commonly known as jaywalking is not a serious crime.

However, the number of pedestrians to die in accidents this year in Georgia is already ahead for the same time last year.

And 2013 saw the highest number of pedestrian deaths since 1997.

It is time to put an end to these rising numbers.

When walking across busy streets, do so at legally designated crossing zones and follow traffic signals for pedestrians.

Also make sure to wear light colored clothing when walking at night.

These tips can not only help save your life.

They can also help you avoid having to pay a ticket.
