County set to vote on unincorporated fire services

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County leaders are expected to vote on fire protection for unincorporated residents.

Monday, a recommendation to approve the proposed service delivery agreement with the City of Albany for fire services was brought to the commissioners. Their current agreement to pay the city of Albany 3.1-Million dollars ends in June. The new agreement will be for the next five years at 3-8 million dollars. Fire officials say it's important to keep this agreement around.

"If you had a fire in the unincorporated or special services fire district in the county, nobody is going to respond. They have to actually start their own fire services from scratch," said Chief James Carswell.

If approved, this will go into affect July 1st. Other special delivery agreements such as code enforcement and recreation services will be voted on at their next meeting on Monday, June 16, 2014.
