GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Former South Carolina House Speaker Rex Carter died at his home in Greenville on Monday, Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes confirmed. He was 88 years old.

The Honea Path native served as House Speaker from 1973 to 1980, and also as a Representative and Speaker Pro Tempore for more than a decade.

He later went on to start a successful law practice in the Upstate.

Visitation for Carter will be at his residence on June 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be on June 12 at 2 p.m. at Augusta Road Baptist Church.
