Vienna Firefighters raise money for burn foundation

VIENNA, GA (WALB) -
Every year the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department raises thousands of dollars for burn patients through their annual fundraiser. The Fundraiser is in memory of Lee Harris Jr.,a former fire fighter, and every year it helps support burn patients and their families at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta.
Drivers are rolling down their windows and dropping their money inside a boot to show their support for the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation.
"This is real close to home for us, real personal and today we're out here trying to raise some funds for that," said Richard Hall with the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department.
At least a dozen firefighters with the Vienna Volunteer Fire department are collecting money at the intersection of Union Street and State Route 7. It's a foundation they've been supporting for three years, when one of their own, Lee Harris Jr., died from burn injuries he suffered on his farm in June 2012. He was treated at the burn center in Augusta and died when he was 36 years old.
"He was a full of life character," said Hall. "We all loved him and we certainly do miss him but this is our way of not forgetting about him."
Since then, they've created the "Lee Harris Jr. Memorial Fundraiser" to support the foundation.
"A burn patient has months, sometimes years worth of treatment to go through," said Hall.
Harris's mother was also there for support and even the little ones helped the firefighters collect money.
"They're already volunteering their time for the fire department, this is just something that comes natural," said Hall.
The Department raised $2500 this evening to benefit the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation.
The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department is also competing for the "Johnsonville's The Best of Us" competition. They need your votes to win $10,000 which will help support the burn foundations. Voting ends June 20th. To vote click here.
