Worth sheriff shows off sex offender website

Posted: Updated:

The Worth County Sheriff's Office launched a new sex offenders website this week. There are nearly 80 registered sex offenders living in Worth County.

"The way the laws are going with sex offenders and stuff, we've been getting more and more coming into the county everyday. I mean in the last, probably the last week, we've had four to five new sex offenders come into the county," said Worth County Sheriff Jeff Hobby.

Offenders have to tell the Sheriff's Department where they live, work and if they have any new recognizable marks like tattoos.

The information they get is then uploaded to a nationwide database that the department recently added to their website. The OffenderWatch link allows anyone to search for sex offenders in the area.

"When they get out of prison, they have a certain amount of time that they've got to come in to register," said Hobby. "That way when they register, when they get up out of that chair, they're automatically on the website."

Each offender can be searched by name, address, or offenses. And anytime something in their life changes, they're required to notify the sheriff's office, who makes it immediately available on your computer screen.

"That way people in the community know who is, where they live at, who they are and what they've been convicted of," said Hobby. Victims and residents who live in the county can sign up for email alerts for certain offenders.

"They will be able to better take care of their children and they need to know who's living in their community."

You can also get safety tips or notify police about offenders, to keep you and your neighbors informed about who could be living right next door.
