ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Friends and family honored military retirees at the Marine Corps Logistics Base Wednesday.

They heard from Westover High student Othellious Cato, who is the district winner of the Albany exchange speech club contest.

And Colonel Donald Davis spoke about the impact retirees can make by reading and sharing stories to kids.

"We have to keep it going [on] how important it is for future generations, to tell them the stories of the past, our history," said Cato.

"We need the retirees to step out and come into our schools and to mentor and share that wisdom that they've got," said Col. Davis.

Cato received a standing ovation for his speech and plans on studying political science at Valdosta State in the fall.
