Warrant taken in violent armed robbery

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County Police issue warrants for a suspect in a violent armed robbery.

The robber fired several shots at the owner of a convenience store who chased him.

Police are looking for 57-year old John Dabney.
Investigators say about 8:45 Tuesday night he pointed a gun at Ravi Patel at the Stop and Shop on Cordele Road.
Patel refused to give him money and pushed the gunman out the door.
The robber ran to a waiting car driven by a second man.
Patel jumped in his car and chased the robber.

Dougherty County Police Lt. Chad Kirkpatrick said "It's not something we recommend, by chasing the suspect. Especially if they are armed.  If you can get a tag number safely or any information safely, a description of the subject, that's fine."

Patel wasn't hurt, but his car was hit by bullets.

Police say they're glad he got the robber's tag number, but they say you shouldn't chase an armed robber.

They say Dabney was in a 2002 Black Honda Accord.

He was released from prison in December 2012 after serving a 25 year sentence for aggravated assault.

If you have any information about Dabney, call Dougherty County Police at 430-6600 or crime stoppers at 436-tips.
