The brand new Sylvester Walmart opened Wednesday morning.

Oakfield resident Shirley Connell is excited about the opportunity. "You got your clothes, you got your food together right here, you don't have to go store to store to buy stuff," Connell said.

And for the 6,000 people who call Sylvester home, driving 20 miles outside to pick up a few items will now be a thing of the past.

"This is why I wanted a one over here; so I wouldn't have to go so far back," Pam Ayers said. " I mean that's 40 miles twice."

The Mayor of Sylvester, Walmart management teams and city leaders joined together in a ribbon cutting ceremony that celebrated the store's debut. Construction began last fall and since some residents have been anticipating when they will be able to shop locally.

City leaders as well as customers say they look forward to seeing what changes the store will bring. Councilman Larry Johnson feels its more than just convenience, he believes the multi-billion dollar chain will generate a positive impact in the community.

"Walmart is like a magnet, it draws other businesses and stuff to our area," Johnson said. "So, we look forward for the economical standpoint."

Over 150 new jobs have been created with almost all positions filled by Worth County residents, enabling the town to grow and expand opportunities for residents.

"Its going to help with our tax revenue, our road improvements, infrastructure, it will be a very big plus to Sylvester," Johnson said.

And an accomplishment for the economic development team including the chamber of commerce who spear headed in landing the franchise.

As for Shirley Connell, she's ready to start saving  money a little closer to home.

"I'm gonna love it here."

Marking the beginning of what could become a even larger retail family.
