Georgia Senator honor military academy appointees

ATLANTA, GA (WALB) -

Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga), vice chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and senior member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, hosted a congratulatory luncheon for 30 Georgia high school seniors and their families on Monday in Atlanta.

Two of the Senator's nominees Austin Berchtold of Poulan and Carl Johnson from Americus have received appointments to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Chambliss nominated these outstanding young men and women to the United States military academies, and they have since received appointments to these esteemed schools.

"You're here because you've excelled in your academic studies, demonstrated a high level of physical fitness, participated in leadership organizations, been a positive example to your communities, and - most importantly - you have demonstrated the moral and ethical values to excel in a tough profession," Chambliss said.

Senator Chambliss also said. "Young men and women like you are the embodiment of the perseverance and leadership that makes America the great nation it is. It has been a privilege during my service in both the House and Senate to get to know our young people and their families through this process."

Every year, Senator Chambliss nominates candidates for each academy opening in a competitive selection contest.

Service academy graduates commit to serve that branch of military for five years following graduation, in exchange for receiving an education valued at approximately $350,000.
