DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -

Dougherty County leaders welcomed a new commissioner at their first meeting in June.

Long time county resident Harry James was sworn in as the district 5 commissioner by Probate Judge Nancy Stephenson.

He was sworn in at the beginning of Monday's commission meeting and took his seat.

James will fill the remaining term of Gloria Gaines who had to resign in order to run for County Commission chairman where she lost a close race to Chris Cohilas.

James ran and lost against Art Searles and then Gaines in 2008, but was determined to serve as a commissioner.

"It's finally been, with my long history of attending meetings and being a part, but never being officially on the other side of the table. It felt great," said James. He says he will work hard for the constituents of his district.

The District 5 seat will be up for election in 2016.
