Pilots from around the U.S. are preparing to compete in the Sailplane Competition in Cordele.

The competition kicks off Monday at the Cordele-Crisp County Airport. It's organized by the Mid-Georgia Soaring Association.  Pilots will fly various courses using their GPS systems. The winners in each category could qualify to compete in the world sailplane competition in Poland at the end of July.

"We normally launch depending on the weather, somewhere between noon and one o'clock," said Contest Manager Andreea Alexandrescu.  "It is very interesting to see a grid full of gliders. We are expecting to have around 35 gliders flying."

Cordele-Crisp County has hosted the competition since 1970. It is open to the public. The competition wraps up June 7th.
