Be warned: Sweepstakes scam afoot

Posted: Updated:

An Ashburn woman says she received calls from scammers this week claiming to be Publishers Clearing House representatives.

Carolyn Jones says she got more than one call from a Jamaican number, saying she won $395,000 and a new car.

She says the scammers never asked for personal information.. But told her in order to receive her prize, she had to wire them money.

"So I said 'Okay ill talk to him and this guy.' I know I talked to him for about 15 or 20 minutes just drilling, drilling, drilling and trying to figure out exactly what was going on. "

In March Effingham County Authorities also sent out an alert to residents about calls from the same type of scammers.

Publisher Clearing House want all of their contest winners to know they have never have to pay advance fees to collect their winnings.
