ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police say they are concerned by the number of people walking in roads, and being hit by cars, and they are going to start cracking down.

They don't have exact numbers, but they know the number of pedestrians hit by cars has increased  significantly so far this year.

Police say Pine Avenue in downtown Albany is one area where many people ignore crosswalks and dart through traffic to cross the street.   After recent pedestrian deaths, APD is going to start issuing to citations to anyone walking in the road or crossing outside a crosswalk.

"You must also realize that you are a 200 pound person versus a 2,000 pound car. The person in that car is not necessarily going to get hurt when they hit you. But I can promise you if that car hits you, you are going to get hurt," said Officer Christopher Richardson.

Albany Police are advising pedestrians to walk against traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles and to wear clothing that is easily visible when walking at night.
