VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The 347th Rescue Group at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta has a new commander.

The passing of the 347th Rescue Group's flag means Colonel Thomas Dorl is now the commander of the 347th Rescue Group.

"Both Barbra and I are very excited to be back here. We haven't been back here since 1999," he said.

Dorl, a former weapons officer with the 41st rescue squadron, one of four that make up the 347th Rescue Group, says  he looks forward to carrying on the success of outgoing commander, Colonel Steven Gregg.

"He's a phenomenal leader and I just hope I can continue the momentum and success that he's had as well," said Dorl.

An HH60G Pavehawk helicopter flown by Colonel Dorl, and was renamed in his honor as part of the change of command ceremony.

And his first mission?   "Spend a lot of time with the squadrons, the four squadrons that we have in the 347th. Understanding what their issues and challenges are, getting to know the people and their missions."

Something he plans to get started on right away.
