ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

June 1st kicks off the start of hurricane season and this week is Hurricane Preparedness Week.

Emergency officials say a slower than normal hurricane season has been predicted because of El Nino, but they caution it only takes one to do the damage.

"We ask that you plan as a family," said Deputy Director of Albany-Dougherty Emergency Management Jim Vaught. "It's too late once the hurricane is already here. We ask that you sit down with your family, plan what you're going to do during a emergency. We ask that you put together an emergency kit. If we lose power for 72 hours we hope that you will have the equipment to sustain yourself for the things you need."
