City officials in shock after downtown monuments are vandalized

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Police are trying to figure out who vandalized both the World War II, and Vietnam monuments in downtown Albany.

Police say the crime was reported Saturday afternoon. The vandals sprayed black paint across the front of the two monuments.

Judy Bowles with Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful, and Commissioner BJ Fletcher spend time downtown trying to remove the paint.

This is not the first time these monuments have been vandalized. Fletcher said she is devastated, and noted this will not stop them from making improvements to the area.

"If they think they are going to stop us from improving the park and adding other statues then they are very wrong. We have a new one in the works now and one dollar of cheap spray paint has done all this damage but we are gonna get it cleaned up and continue with the holiday," said commissioner Fletcher.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
