Memorial Day travel tips

Memorial Day weekend is here, and the good weather will draw a lot of people out to the water.

The Department of Natural Resources is reminding people to be safe.

The DNR will be out making sure boaters are operating in a safe manner this weekend. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kick off to the summer.

DNR officers say they realize people may choose to drink, but they want to make sure there's a designated sober operator who stays hydrated while out on the water.

The DNR says they'll also be looking for people who are operating in a negligent manner, such as speeding or getting too close to other boats.

"That means they are taking chances. They're getting too close to other boats, excessive speed, just not looking out. Operator inattention causes a lot of accidents," said Lt. Colonel Jeff Weaver with DNR.

Also make sure you have all the proper safety equipment, including life jackets while you have a boat out on the water.
