GDOT opens up highways for holiday travel

Posted: Updated:

The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures on interstates and other major state routes, beginning at noon Friday.

The DOT says that as travelers take to the roads over the Memorial Day weekend, which typically marks the beginning of the summer vacation season, they want to help ease travel through and within Georgia.

The restriction will remain in place until 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 27.

Crews may still be working in proximity to highways and safety concerns may require some long-term lane closures remain in place. Emergency, maintenance-related lane closures also could become necessary at any time on any route.

The American Automobile Association projects 31.8 million travelers will be on the road nationwide during the long holiday period, an increase compared to last year. Georgia DOT reminds motorists to exercise caution, pay attention to speed limit and other road signs and allow extra travel time for congested highways.

Georgia DOT offers free, helpful resources for travelers. Call 511 within the state of Georgia or 1-877-MYGA511 (1-877-694-2511) toll-free for real-time traffic information.

A "Georgia 511" mobile app is available and traveler information can also be accessed at .
