The primary election kicks off this morning, city officials are encouraging residents to come out and cast their ballots.

Albany city commissioner, Roger Marietta, feels the most critical thing you can do as a citizen.  He says 4% of voters in Dougherty County have already taken advantage of early voting last month and feels today will reveal a positive turnout as well.

At local level, Dougherty has two school board positions open including three city commissioner seats. Albany resident, David Bush says he makes an effort to vote during each election and feels its important for more people to get involved.

"I'm concerned about my community, my leadership and what happens, whoever you put in reflects what happens in the community," Bush said.

Marietta says when it comes to the state level elections, those running for the U.S. Senate will grab most of the attention and that will drive people to the polls.

Several candidates will be seeking to take over Senator Saxby Chambliss' seat. The Moultrie native has fulfilled two terms and will soon retire. Michelle Nunn, Jack Kingston, and Karen Handel are a few that are in the running.
