(WMC) - Police arrested a suspect who they believe stabbed and carjacked a mother. A desperate search followed for the woman's 11-month-old and 3-year-old.

Investigators say the baby, named Diamond, and a 3-year-old were in a car with their mother when a Derrick Fifer, 23, stabbed her and took off in her Cadillac Escalade.

The suspect later ditched the car at Summerwood Drive and Gill Road. According to investigators, the 3-year-old was found 1.4 miles away, but Diamond and the suspect were still missing.

Police searched the area with K-9 officers and a helicopter for several hours. Diamond was eventually found safe by a group of men walking in Polly Williams Park.

"And we sorta heard a noise. We thought maybe it was a dog or something, and we went up there, and we looked over there in the bushes and we saw a car seat," explained Stanley Smith, who was one of the men who found the baby girl. "We do feel like a hero. No telling what would have happened between now and maybe 5, 6 o'clock maybe dark would have come up. They do have raccoons and possums and all that running in the park."

Diamond's mother was taken to the Regional Medical Center.

Fifer is charged with aggravated robbery, two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, criminal attempted kidnapping, theft of property, criminal attempted kidnapping, theft of property $1,000-$10,000 to wit motor vehicle, and aggravated assault.
