MILLEN, GA (WFXG) -

Strange lights over Jenkins County on Thursday night so far have been unexplained.

First, I saw the lights while driving on Highway 25 - then, 45 minutes later - our own Traci Washington saw the lights while covering a domestic standoff in Millen.

"I was waiting for my live shot to start and then, I saw something in the sky, I didn't know what it was, I looked up," said Washington.

Our experiences are very similar - first, a bright, red light - followed by the light breaking apart and becoming multiple lights, in formation - the whole experience lasted for about 10 seconds before the lights simply vanished.

"Yeah, it was really strange, I've never seen anything like it," said Washington.

So, we checked our sources, to find a possible explanation.

Researchers from the American Meteor Society ruled it out as the meteor that caused a sonic boom that night in West Virginia; while it would have been visible from our area, we couldn't have seen it twice.

They did, however, say it could have been a couple of fireballs from space. It's something they say is a rare experience.

I also reached out to MUFON - or Mutual UFO Network. They say they'll look into the lights to try to find an explanation.

Fort Gordon officials reported no aircraft exercises that night from the post or any surrounding Army installations, and the FAA reported no aircraft incidents Thursday night.

"It wasn't shooting across," said Washington. :It showed up in the sky, it kind of stopped and just broke. I have no idea what it was."
