DAWSON, GA (WALB) -

Two young mothers left behind six kids after separate illnesses took their lives just months apart.   One high school classmate is putting together an event this weekend to help the kids and everyone is invited.

Six children ages 5 through 12 lost their mothers in 2013. One to Lupus and the other to lung cancer. Cedrick Bogan was a high school classmate and feels their pain.   "I've been without my mom for 21 years and it still hurts and I still cry," he said.

Bogan decided to make a difference and bring a community together and this Saturday is filled with surprises.   "Once 8:00 hits we're gonna do a balloon release bunch of white balloons with helium in memory of R Bell and Shardae Hall right after that, gonna kick off the 5k."

Family and friends gathered to make all the last minute preparations. And talked about what this day means for them.   "Even though they're not here I still get a part of them I get to look into their kids' faces and I get to see them every day," said Leondrea Lockett.   The Dawson Police Department is donating their time to protect the runners and keep them on the route.

"What they'll be doing is going back and forth handing out water and bananas making sure everyone is hydrated and no one passes out during the race," said Bogan.   "Anything to help kids the public safety department will be involved," said Charlie Whitehead.

Former Albany football players and some current college players will be on hand for some entertaining flag football. And a big cookout will take care of the appetite you're sure to work up.

"Everybody please come out this is for the kids, not for us this is for the kids," Lockett said.

"What we're gonna do is try to raise some money take them school shopping get them shoes and clothes, do something special for the kids because you never get over losing your mom you learn to live with it," said Bogan.
