CAMILLA, GA (WALB) -

Firefighters battled a stubborn blaze early Thursday morning, leaving major roof damage.

It happened at a home located at 27 East Stephens Street near downtown Camilla. Firefighters responded to the call around 2:15am to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the house.

They discovered the fire was trapped between the attic and a new ceiling the resident installed, which made it difficult to get to.

CFD called for Autry State Prison firefighters for assistance. After two and half hours, the flames were under control.

Fire officials say no one was inside at the time. They also say the home can be saved, even with the smoke and water damage. One half of the roof is gone, while the other has gaping holes where fire broke through in several patches.

Currently the fire is under investigation. Camilla Fire Chief Jaime Sullivan said the cause could be a number of things, possibly lightning from the storm that rolled through or even an electrical issue.

They say they will continue to examine the home throughout the morning.
