City Budget talks underway

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany City Commissioners began their work on next year's budget. They met today to start discussing the budget for the fiscal year that starts in July.

City Manager James Taylor says challenges include the increasing cost of health insurance and continuing to pay for items such as the Civic Center and Transit services, which don't generate enough revenue to pay for themselves.

"The fact is that these are services that the community needs but they cannot generate enough revenue to support themselves, now do we want a civic center, a transit service, and an airport, the answer is clearly yes but we also have to pay for that," says Assistant City Manager Wes Smith.

The 2015 budget will likely include nearly 2-million dollars to subsidize the Albany Civic Center, Transit system,  and the Airport.
