ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The board accepted the resignation of Dougherty High teacher Albert Yon who was accused of making inappropriate comments to female students.

School officials say there are more than a dozen other resignations and non-renewals of contracts in the works.  That's the highest number in several years.  The superintendent says the non-renewals come because of various reasons such as cuts to state funding or because of teachers who simply didn't live up to expectations.

"I'm on a mission to rid this system of inferior employees and fill it with employees that want to give their best to the youngsters who deserve nothing but the best," said Superintendent Dr. David Mosely.

At least three teachers given non-renewal notices have filed appeals and will be granted hearings. School officials plan to have a full list of teachers whose contracts they don't plan to renew by Friday.
