Landfill tipping fees could increase

DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

People who dump at the Dougherty County Landfill could soon start paying higher tipping fees.On Monday County commissioners discussed raising fees by 1.6-percent.

They plan to use that as a guideline for gradual increases each year. The current rate is nearly 37-dollars per ton.

The proposal commissioners are considering would raise that by 59-cents.

"You have to have the heavy equipment which costs 200 to 300 thousand dollars to move the dirt, you have to build more sales, construct more sales for the future costs of the solid waste so its an extremely expensive operation," says County Administrator Richard Crowdis.

County Commissioners will vote next week on the issue. If approved the higher fee will take effect in July.
