Postal workers join together in 'Stamp Out Hunger' food drive

Postal workers hope to collect tons of canned goods Saturday to help combat hunger.

Mail carriers have been delivering blue bags for the 22nd National Association of Letter Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive.

They will wear Stamp Out Hunger t-shirts as they collect non-perishable items donated by homeowners to be sent to local food banks.

They want people to fill up the bags instead of throwing them away.

"We would love for them to still leave them at their boxes or bring them into the Post Office," said Leesburg Postmaster Lorie McDonough. "The carriers will continue to pick them up and we'll continue to take them."

The Leesburg Post Office has already filled up one container for this year. They filled up eight last year and hope to beat that number. 74 million pounds of food were collected nationwide last year, feeding 30 million people.
