Jason Carter focusing on education in bid to become state Governor

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Jason Carter is focusing much of his campaign on education.

He says, despite an increase in funding this year, Governor Nathan Deal has overseen major education spending cuts that hurt Georgia schools.

He wants to create a separate education budget that would be funded first. That way lawmakers couldn't balance the budget on the backs of public school students.

"Well I think folks are real dissatisfied with the way the state government has been handling public education," Carter said. "I mean, we have seen the worst contraction of public education in the history of Georgia."

Carter also wants to strengthen the HOPE scholarship program.
