MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - A church burglary suspect was captured in a church van he stole to get away from the scene.

The church lost roughly $12,000 worth of merchandise in the incident. And even though they're the victims, they're concerned with helping turn the alleged suspect's life around.

Emmanuel Baptist Church Pastor D'Arcy Deveaux says someone didn't use wisdom when he broke into the church last Saturday.

"I noticed the alarm didn't go off and looked over to the left, the door was busted in. Came upstairs and all of the offices were broken into," he said. "They took all of our computers, all of our televisions. They took both my laptops. They took the spare laptop that we had."

Even the new keyboard and amplifier were gone.

"Part of me was hurt, devastated, frustrated," said Deveaux.

He says worst of all the suspect drove off in the church's van.

"So now tomorrow I've got to figure our a way to get a van for the weekend so that we can have it for members to get to church," he said.

Randal Williams is behind bars at the Shelby County Jail. He was picked up after officers received a prowler call at 1299 Cella Street. They found Williams sitting in the front seat of the church van with the engine running.

"It's like, how dumb could you be? This, that you're driving is stolen, this big old writing on that, that belongs to ... Or somebody's gonna see you. So it's just ridiculous," said Deveaux.

Deveaux says the church will recover. He says his concern now is for Williams and what's driving him to do these things.

"If you were to sell all the stuff you sold, you would survive for about three months. What next? You'll be back in the same condition again," he said.

Williams is charged with auto theft and theft of property.
