Unanimous vote to fire teacher in child porn case

A Dougherty County middle school teacher, charged with child pornography is one step closer to being out of a job.

40-year old Brian Brannen did not show up for his tribunal hearing Thursday afternoon.

The hearing was held because Superintendent Dr. David Mosely is recommending Brannen be fired after Brannen was charged with 24 counts of child pornography. He was arrested in early April.

The school system called three witnesses, including Captain Craig Dodd with the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office. The tribunal voted unanimously to uphold the recommendation to fire Brannen.

"The information that we received from the Dougherty County Sheriff's Department, from Dr. Mosely, from Mr. Dudley was clear cut in that Mr. Brannen had problems even in the classroom, not only with the pornography," said Sam Allen, a tribunal member and retired Superintendent for Valdosta City Schools.

School officials testified saying they had other problems with Brannen over the years. He was put on leave a month before he was arrested.

"Anytime your in education and your talking about children and your talking about pornography, there's no place for that. It is extremely serious," said Allen.

Now the school board has to vote on the tribunal's recommendation to terminate Brannen.

Brannen is out of jail on bond.

According to school records, Brannen has been a teacher in the Dougherty County School System for at least four years.
