LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Governor Nathan Deal is in Leesburg for their groundbreaking ceremony to build a new bridge.

"Their transportation dollars are being put to useful purposes and for this community," said the governor. "I think this is one of the most useful projects, even though it's not large in terms of the length of the project. The purpose that it serves is huge."

Leesburg city manager Bob Alexander feels this is a huge milestone for them and is excited to have the community celebrate with him. The area under construction will run from state route 195 to US 19 over the railroad tracks.

He believes by adding this new bridge it will allow the city to expand economically but also improve their heavy traffic situation.

Alexander says the city is made up of approximately 3,000 residents but because all of the high schools are located Leesburg it bumps up the amount of people to about 10,000, generating more traffic.

He feels this is especially true in the downtown area and feels its also a safety concern for school buses, with the new road they would be able to drive above the tracks rather than stop at them.

Mayor Jim Quinn spoke, as well as Governor Nathan Deal, to show their support.

The project is said to take a little over a year to complete, they are hoping to have it ready for drivers by December of 2015.

Governor Deal is also encouraging people to get out and vote for the earlier than usual Primary elections. "We have turned our state around we have dropped our unemployment rate to the lowest it's been in five years. We've made reforms in everything from education to our technical college systems, to our prison system and to our criminal justice system. All of these, some of which pay short term dividends, but all which will pay long term dividends."
