Syrupmaids' season ended in OT

Ross celebrates her game-tying goal Ross celebrates her game-tying goal

Things looked bleak for Cairo during much of Wednesday's state playoff game. And just as the tides began to turn, Locust Grove reclaimed victory.

The Syrupmaids trailed Locust Grove, 2-0, with 11 minutes remaining in the AAAA second round matchup.

The Maids' outlook brightened when Annie Ross took over.

She trimmed the lead to 2-1 with 10:24 to play on a goal that was scored on sheer will.

Ross ran down a free ball to beat a Lady Wildcat defender, headed the ball forward before her shot deflected straight up off Locust Grove keeper Kayla Miklausich. Ross headed the ball again off the deflection, this time with just enough power to cross the line.

With less than a minute to play, Ross made another run, but was tackled on the shot to draw a penalty just outside the box.

She took the free kick, and placed a bending strike just out of reach of Miklausich to tie the game with 33 seconds left.

Neither team could score in the first five-minute overtime period.

With 38 seconds left before penalty kicks, Locust Grove star Emma Welch gave the Lady Wildcats a 3-2 lead.

The Alabama commit made a quick move, then fired a left-footed blast into the upper right corner to break the Syrupmaids' hearts.

Locust Grove advances to the Elite Eight to play Alexander.
