ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The city of Albany says the 150-year-old Willow Oak is in danger of falling, and poses a threat to Dawson Road motorists.

Realtor Richard Thomas brought in expert arborists who say the tree just needs some pruning.

The previous owner of the property fought to save the tree 22 years ago when the city widened the road.

Thomas says he hopes the pruning he will have done Thursday will satisfy the city and save the tree.

"It sets a bad precedent to allow this tree to be cut down, because that means that any citizen with a tree on their property, whether it's on their property, or the city's property, if it's conceived as a public hazard, the city can take it down."

Thomas says the tree rivals the state champion willow in Buckhead City and should be saved as a historical landmark.
