Crash highlights school bus safety

A Dougherty County school bus was hit so hard in a crash Monday afternoon, that it may be totaled.

A pickup slammed into the back of it as students were getting off the bus on Sylvester Road around 5:15 p.m. The frame is bent and the axle was knocked into the engine.

Despite that impact, none of the nine students on board nor the bus driver was seriously hurt. The DCSS Transportation Director says that proves how safe school buses are. "Our buses are safe. This is the safest mode of transportation for our students, and I would definitely have my child ride a school bus in relation to driving in a passenger vehicle," said Kenneth Williams.

He urges drivers to be cautious around buses. Williams says during a survey one day last month, they counted more than 85 cars illegally passing buses.

The pickup truck driver who slammed into the bus, 24 year-old Stephen Botton, remains in the hospital in good condition.
