AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

One man is in the hospital and another man is in custody after a shooting at Paine College Monday afternoon.

Deputies responded to the shooting call just after 1 p.m., according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. They found 21-year-old JaJuan Awayness Baker on the third floor of Haygood-Holsey Hall, an administrative building, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Baker, who is from Wilmington, N.C., was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center, deputies said. He was alert and conscious when deputies arrived at the scene, but his injury turned life-threatening.

The suspect in the shooting is 20-year-old Xavier Deanthony Cooper, who is also a student at the school, deputies said.

Cooper was taken into custody around 3:10 p.m., according to the sheriff's office. The college was placed on lockdown, while deputies interviewed witnesses and searched the campus. They found Cooper in one of the dorms on campus.

Deputies say the shooting started as an argument between the two men.

Cooper is being held at the Richmond County Jail and is charged with aggravated assault, possession of firearm or knife during crime, and possession of weapons in a school building.

Monday's shooting is the second shooting on the campus in less than 24 hours. A shooting was also reported on the campus Sunday afternoon.

Deputies believe the two on-campus shootings and another shooting on Laurel Street are all connected

Paine College officials said they are beefing up patrols on campus.
