Society, Tift fires ruled arson

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany fire fighters responding to a fire at 1219 East Society also received a call about a fire at 1327 East Tift Avenue, about a block away, within moments.

Both structures are vacant, leading fire officials to check the possibility that someone is walking the neighborhood, setting the houses on fire, which would be a clear case of arson.

Later in the day, they concluded that they were deliberately set.

"We did a quick search of the front room and the back room and then we proceeded to fight the fire," said Chief Battalion Keith Ambrose.

Just moments before they were called one street over to this home on East Society Avenue for another blaze.  We were on the scene with firefighters here whenever they looked to the sky and saw smoke billowing nearby. We followed firefighters here where they saw smoke from the center of the home and flames shooting from the front door.

Each house was vacant, and there are several empty homes in the area.  For the first blaze, fire officials initially suspected a common problem.

"This area is just like some of those where you've got a lot of vacant structures, and with folks that don't have a lot of places to go, they're going to find a place."

But as they responded to the second home, suspicion immediately grew.

"There's a fire a block away at the same time we're fighting that fire, this fire just happened you know, we happened to see the smoke."

Now, an investigation is underway to find out if the two were connected and if they were the work of an arsonist or vagrant.
