Be alert for snakes

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The heavy rain is forcing some critters to move out of their natural habitat. Venomous water snakes usually slither near the banks of various bodies of water.

But with a lot of standing water and high water levels on creeks and rivers. They may venture closer to walking trails and even your home.

Chehaw Natural Resource Manager Ben Kirkland says you shouldn't worry too much, but you should be aware of your surroundings.

"When we do have those brief periods of sunshine that we've had through April, they will be out in sunny areas to warm up, but as far as causing a great movement among them it's not going to do it because we haven't had that extensive flooding," said Kirkland.

If a venomous snake bites you, you need to get to an emergency room right away.

Don't try to do anything to remove the venom on your own.
