CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

A man and his infant daughter were killed, two others injured, after their family car went over an embankment and fell 100 feet into a ravine.

"It appears it was just a tragic accident at the time it was raining and it was dark out. There's a lot of things if you're not familiar with the area that could have come into play," said Captain Jack Angelo of Canton Police.

It happened around 11 p.m. Thursday on the off ramp from U.S. 30 to I-77 South in Canton.

Police tell 19 Action News the 2000 Chevrolet Tracker veered off the roadway and crashed down the embankment into the water. The passengers in the vehicle were trapped inside.

"On that ramp there is somewhat of a sharp curve, it appears he just didn't negotiate the curve was unable to and the car went over the cement divider wall," said Captain Jack Angelo of Canton Police.

Canton Police officers initially entered the water to attempt to rescue the victims.  The Canton Fire Department's water rescue team also responded and assisted.

The driver of the vehicle, Paul T. Guthrie, 23, was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center.

The passengers in the vehicle were transported to Aultman Hospital and later transferred to Akron Children's Hospital and Akron General Hospital.

Kymberlie Guthrie, 26, is listed in critical condition at Akron General Hospital. Emelyn Guthrie, 1, is listed in stable condition at Akron Children's. Gabriella Guthrie, 3 months, died at Akron Children's Hospital.

19 Action News has learned that the Stark County Dog Warden has received information that the family dog, Aspen, may have been in the car at the time of the deadly accident. Crews are now searching along the riverbanks for signs of Aspen, who is described as a white boxer-type dog.

Anyone with information on Aspen's whereabouts is urged to call the Stark County Dog Warden at 330-451-2343.

Several officers were treated at Aultman Hospital for exposure from being in the water during the rescue.

Donations can be made at any Huntington Bank under "Guthrie Family Fund", to help with funeral expenses and Kymberlie's expected long recovery time.
