Firefighters give lightning strike protection suggestions

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA - (WALB) -

There have been four lightning fires in Dougherty County so far this year, including one at an Albany apartment complex Tuesday.

Lightning rods mounted on the roof will transfer some of the lightning's power to the ground, but firefighters say they can actually attract more lightning strikes.

Albany's Fire Chief James Carswell says there are few other ways to prevent lightning from hitting your home.

"You can minimize your opportunity for lightning to not strike your house by not having tall trees nearby,"said Carswell.  "Not having metal objects sticking up in the air, like the old timey TV antennas.  Those kind of things."

Chief Carswell said more frequent thunderstorms this year have caused many more lightning strikes than in recent years.
