CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

A Cairo shelter is back open after a distemper outbreak.

Heartbreakingly, Second Chance Animal Rescue, a no-kill shelter had to euthanize some of their dogs due to the outbreak. They traced to outbreak to a puppy they agreed to nurse that had not been vaccinated.

Before the shelter could re-open, the center had to be renovated. A chemical company sanitized the building and it had to stay empty for 21 days because that's how long the virus can stay dormant with out a host.

"We pretty much had to completely start over, we have to be careful now of what rescues we can take in, certain instances we can and can't help, that kind of thing," said volunteer Cassidi Long.

The shelter reopened this past Saturday.
