LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

The GBI is investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate in his cell at the Lowndes County Jail early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff's officials say 45 year-old Paul Wadman hanged himself with a bed sheet. Wadman had been in jail since April 17th when he was arrested for DUI.

"Around two o' clock this morning, the officer conducted a check of Mr. Wadman's cell; he was fine at that time," explained Lowndes County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Stryde Jones. "When the officer returned a short time later, Mr. Wadman had apparently committed suicide."

The GBI will conduct an autopsy and then Wadman's body will be released to his family.
