ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Thousands of children continue to struggle with hunger. Georgia ranks 4th highest in the nation for food insecurity. One in 3 children will likely go without a meal tonight.

Kids that live in rural areas are more vulnerable. Second harvest of south Georgia is trying to change that. It covers 30 counties across 13 thousand square miles.

"We were surprised by where we ranked in Nationally, but no we've known for quite some time that 1 in 3 kids will go hungry before they go to bed tonight," said Chief Marketing Officer Eliza McCall with the Second Harvest of South Georgia.

Stamp out hunger is coming up on May 10th. Watch for the blue bag in your mailbox. Fill it up with non perishable items and your mail carrier will pick it up. If you don't receive a blue bag you can use paper or plastic.

Kids Cafe is another Second Harvest program that makes sure at-risk children get a healthy lunch and homework help if they need it after school.

Farm to Family is a program where Second Harvest of South Georgia partners with local farmers to pick up unused produce. 3 million pounds were picked up last year and Second Harvest is hoping to pick up 10 thousand pounds this year.

McCall says rural areas are more difficult as transportation to a grocery store or food bank can be difficult or non existent.

Second Harvest welcomes donations of food, funds or your time. We will have more on a new Thomasville food bank opening soon.
