LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Two people have been confirmed dead after storms moved through Limestone County on Monday, according to the Limestone County sheriff and EMA officials.

A mother and son were killed at the Billy and Barb's Trailer Park in the Coxey community. They have been identified as 60-year-old Dorothy Jean Hollis and 33-year-old Carlton Earl Hollis. More residents of the mobile home park found safety in the community's tornado shelter.

A survivor of the Coxey tornado, Tammy Haddock, said the park looked "like a bomb went off." She said her trailer is one of five trailers that were destroyed.

The Limestone County EMA confirmed 17 people were transferred to area hospitals, with two of those injuries listed as "severe."

The Red Cross opened a shelter at the Central Church of Christ in Athens to assist tornado survivors.

Four people were injured in Clements and were transported to Athens Hospital. The Clements Fire Department and Clements High School both took a direct hit. Bay Hill Marina also sustained significant damage and one person was injured, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Rene Miguel, Nursing Supervisor for Athens-Limestone Hospital, said more than a dozen people were treated for injuries, with one patient transported to Huntsville Hospital.

Authorities shut down U.S. 72 from Blackburn Road to Elk River at the Limestone/Lauderdale County line so they could work in the affected areas. Drivers are asked to stay off the roads while emergency workers do their job.

Limestone EMA said numerous power lines were down. Officials urged people to stay off roads. Trees were reported down and several homes were damaged. The Poplar Creek substation was hit, and some 14,600 residents were without power, according to utility officials.

Emergency crews are continuing rescue and recovery efforts. Utility crews across the Tennessee Valley are working to repair power outages.

The National Weather Service is dispatching a team on Tuesday to conduct preliminary surveys on the storm damage.

The National Guard is also in Limestone County to assist with storm recovery.
