'Car-jacked' driver rams liquor store wall

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A car slammed into the brick wall of the National Beer and Wine store at 301 Oakridge Drive, just after midnight.

The female driver told Albany Police that she "freaked out" when a man jumped into her car, armed with some sort of weapon, and tried to car-jack her.

She said that's when she rammed into the side of the liquor store, owned by former county commissioner George Brown.

"That's probably 50 percent of our business, is on that side. So it's hurting, but we are thankful that we are still here," Brown said.

The impact shattered the brick wall, and caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to coolers and merchandise inside the store.

Brown says that damage could take weeks to fix.

However, the rest of the store is running as normal, and they are open for business, as they have been for the last 36 years.

The hole was covered by plywood, with the dislodged bricks still on the ground Thursday morning.

APD is investigating.
