Dougherty County Schools officials are urging parents to sign up their children for Pre-K.

Only 45 percent of eligible children in the county participate in the free schooling option despite studies that show it has lasting positive impacts on a child's education.

"It helps develop a child's self-concept, socialization skills," said Pre-K director Glorida Kendall. "Children really need those."

Pre-K director Kendall anticipates spots for next year filling by the end of this school year.
