Tree removal, road closures on Dawson Road halted

Richard Thomas Richard Thomas
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany resident Richard Thomas wants the city to stop with its plans of cutting down of a tree on Dawson Road.

The city planned to close lanes on Dawson Road Thursday to begin bringing down the tree but a judge has put a temporary hold on it due to Thomas request. Part of the tree, falls on Thomas' property.

"Two experts feel that this tree is 90 percent intact," Thomas said. "All it needs is a sanitary pruning and I'm all for that."

The city says it's in danger of falling and poses a safety hazard.  Thomas says the city is being overly pre cautious

"The city is over-reacting to a incident several months ago where a limb feel through a motorists windshield," Thomas said. "They're facing a lawsuit and they went back two days later and cut the tree down and they're going around cutting trees down on the city right away that might in their perception endanger the public."

A hearing is scheduled for April 29th for Thomas to present his stance in front of a judge.
