ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The waiting continues to find out who is going to build a grocery store near Darton College and those who live near the store are ready to shop.

There is plenty of excitement near the Darton College campus with news that a grocery store is being planned for the area.

"Traffic count, the economic numbers and the need for the grocery store, I think it ended up being a home run for us," said Roger Marietta, Ward 4 Commissioner.

Albany City Commissioners have given their approval in rezoning this 9-acre stretch of land so that the 41 thousand square foot grocery store can be built here. Plans call for the new store to have a pharmacy, deli and gas station.

"Everybody was happy about it the planning commission approved it unanimously, the city commission approved it unanimously, and most of the people in my ward that are surrounding it are happy about a new grocery store in our part of the world," said Marietta.

As for what grocery store is going to be built here, Commissioner Marietta says reports that it is going to a WalMart Neighborhood Market are for now just rumors.

"The company that is building the grocery store wants to have the announcement on their own terms," said Marietta.

Those living near the proposed store don't care whose name is on the front door. They are looking forward to having a grocery store that is close to home.

"I ain't got no transportation to get where I need to go,"said Julius Snipes, Darton student. "So I feel it would be great for all the students in the dormitories."

"It's more accessible and you can basically walk to it," said Latosha Garfield, Darton student.

"I know there's going to be a pharmacy there also, which makes it more convenient where medication is a concern,"said Michael Ferguson, Darton Assistant Professor.

Construction could begin as early as June.
