City leaders approve new rules for model airplanes

Albany city commissioners approve new rules for model airplanes.

Following complaints from some people who live near Hilsman Park a citizen's advisory committee spent months studying the issue and coming up with recommendations.  Model airplane enthusiasts can now only fly the planes in Hilsman Park and Heath Park and there are size and noise restrictions. They cannot weigh more than two pounds and cannot reach speeds greater than sixty mph.

"The reason we give them that opportunity is those areas that been checked they say they are suitable to have that and it's not congested to the neighborhood where it's going to be over people's houses," said City Commissioner Tommie Postell.

Violators would first receive a warning but could then be fined up to $500.
